Center the whole person

Leah’s life should not be reduced to the way she died. Use family-approved information, respect the privacy of children, and avoid speculation about causes, diagnosis, or private events.

Use suicide-safe language

  • Use “died by suicide.”
  • Do not describe methods or locations in unnecessary detail.
  • Do not frame suicide as inevitable, heroic, selfish, peaceful, or the result of one event.
  • Include current help information when suicide is discussed.
  • Emphasize help-seeking, prevention, and recovery without making promises.

Interview boundaries

A media request does not create permission to use private photographs, messages, records, or information about minors. Deadlines, subject, intended use, and recording plans should be disclosed before an interview.
