Center the whole person
Leah’s life should not be reduced to the way she died. Use family-approved information, respect the privacy of children, and avoid speculation about causes, diagnosis, or private events.
Use suicide-safe language
- Use “died by suicide.”
- Do not describe methods or locations in unnecessary detail.
- Do not frame suicide as inevitable, heroic, selfish, peaceful, or the result of one event.
- Include current help information when suicide is discussed.
- Emphasize help-seeking, prevention, and recovery without making promises.
Interview boundaries
A media request does not create permission to use private photographs, messages, records, or information about minors. Deadlines, subject, intended use, and recording plans should be disclosed before an interview.
