You do not need to decide anything about the rest of your life. For ten minutes, focus on distance, people, and support.
If there is immediate physical danger, an active attempt, or a medical emergency, contact emergency services immediately.
What you can do now
Take these steps in order.
1
Move away from danger.
2
Move toward people.
3
Call, text, or chat with 988.
Words you can use
Copy, send, or say this:
“I need ten minutes of your full attention. I do not feel safe alone. Please stay with me and help me contact 988.”
Minutes 0–2: create distance
Leave the room, area, vehicle, or situation where you could act. Ask someone else to secure dangerous items. Do not manage this step alone if you are at immediate risk.
Minutes 2–5: make contact
Call or text someone and use the words above. If no one answers, contact 988. Keep trying until you are connected.
Minutes 5–10: stay connected
Tell the person what has made tonight hard, what you are afraid you might do, and what would help you remain safe. Agree on the next handoff: 988, a clinician, an emergency evaluation, or a trusted adult.
When ten minutes ends
Do not return to being alone or to access to dangerous items. Continue with a safety plan and professional support.
