For right now

Make the time between the thought and any action longer. Sit near someone. Keep talking. Drink water, put both feet on the ground, and focus only on the next few minutes while support is being contacted.

If words feel impossible

Show someone this page. Send the message above. You do not owe anyone a complete explanation before receiving help.

Do not carry this alone

If the first person does not understand, tell another person. If you are under 18, involve a trusted adult. Never agree to keep danger secret.

Name what the thought is asking you to escape

You do not have to solve the problem tonight. You can name it: pain, shame, grief, conflict, exhaustion, money, a breakup, fear, or something you cannot yet explain. Naming the pressure can help another person understand what support is needed next.

What not to demand from yourself tonight

  • Do not make permanent decisions during the most intense part of the wave.
  • Do not isolate because you feel embarrassed or burdensome.
  • Do not use alcohol or drugs to try to numb the crisis.
  • Do not wait until you can explain everything perfectly before asking for help.

Continuing care matters

After immediate safety, ask for a professional assessment and a written follow-up plan. Keep appointments, identify people who will check in, and revisit your safety plan when circumstances change.

Before you leave any appointment or emergency setting, ask who to contact if the thoughts return, what the next appointment is, and who will help you follow the plan.
